  • Confined Space Gas-Free

    Overview: During the Confined Space Gas-Free training session, your duties conducting atmospheric testing are outlined as well as the possible hazards that can occur in a confined space.

    Shipyard competent person is a required certification under OSHA to be able to perform specific functions. A Shipyard competent person is the only person that can perform confined space testing other than a marine chemist or Certified Industrial Hygienist certified person. This course covers all the necessary information as required by OSHA regulations.

    Only the Employer’s Company can designate an employee as a Shipyard “Competent” person. Safety Management Systems provides the following training in order for the employer to meet that goal.


    Course Length: 16hrs | CFR Reference: NFPA 306; 29 CFR 1915 Subpart B; Best Safe Work Practices

    Objective: Upon completion of Confined Space Gas-Free training, the student will be familiar with:
    • Hazard Description and Recognition

      • Relevant terms, fire and explosion theory, relevant chemistry (including concepts of flash points, explosive range, the role of oxygen, classification of fuels and solvent vapor pressure)

      • Toxicity resources, guidance and standards: OSHA maritime standards

      • MSDS information and skills

    • Hazard Evaluation and Measurement

      • Instrumentation, theory, operation, maintenance, calibration, limitation of testing equipment

      • Preparation for and the execution of shipboard confined space testing

    • Hazard Prevention, Control and Elimination

      • Regulations: Scope and application of OSHA 1915 and NFPA 306

      • The responsibilities and interaction of the competent person and NFPA certificated Marine Chemist

      • Control of ignition sources

      • Ventilation theory and application

      • Key aspects of respiratory protection

      • The fire watch

      • Written competent person records

    • Practical exercises and applications

      • Practice exercises in testing, recordkeeping and MSDS

      • Review of key elements

      • Examination
    Prerequisite: None.

    Written Exam: Written and hands-on competency will be evaluated at the end of each course. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.
