Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S)

***This course is part of CORE Training Day 3.

Overview: The goal of the Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) course is to learn how to recognize when Hydrogen Sulfide is present in your work area and to describe the precautions necessary to work with Hydrogen Sulfide safely. This program will help to fulfill the training requirements of API Recommended Practice 49, ANSI Z390.1 and other regulatory standards.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) training, the student will be familiar with:

Give the definition of Hydrogen Sulfide, along with its toxicity, common names and how it is formed
State that the common industrial sites where H₂S can be found include Petro-Chemical, Petroleum Exploration and Production, Manufacturing, and Agricultural
State the properties and characteristics of H₂S
List the concentrations/toxic levels of H₂S according to the ACGIH TLV/TWA, OSHA PEL/TWA, along with exposure levels and toxic gas comparisons
List the common H₂S effects on individuals along with entry routes, susceptibility and hyper-susceptibility issues
Compare/contrast the detection and monitoring personal, portable and fixed monitors and detectors including chemical vs. electronic instrumentation
Hands on exhibit of SCBA use and limitations
Compare/contrast the types of Air Supplied Respirators, including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, Airline Respirator with Egress Bottle and the Escape Pack
Discuss the Special Problems created with the use of Corrective Glasses/Contact Lenses, facial hair and facial characteristics
List the Medical Considerations with wearing an Air Supplied Respirator
Demonstrate proper maintenance and inspection of Air Supplied Respirators
Complete a Donning and Doffing Exercise according to regulatory and company-specific time limits
Discuss Rescue, First Aid Techniques and Post-Exposure Evaluation, including Emergency Rescue; Rescue Breathing and CPR; Medical Follow-Up with students stating the importance of maintaining a valid Adult CPR and First Aid certification

Written Exam: Written and hands-on competency will be evaluated at the end of each course. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.

Retraining: Student is responsible for retraining every year.

Respiratory Protection

Overview: OSHA's primary objective for the Respiratory Protection course is the prevention of atmospheric contamination. Accepted engineering control measures are to be used to accomplish this (for example, enclosure or confinement of the operation, general and local ventilation, and substitution of less toxic materials). When effective engineering controls are not feasible or sufficient, or while they are being instituted, OSHA requires that employees use appropriate respirators. When your employees need respirators to do their jobs, setting up an effective respirator safety program is essential. The respiratory protection regulation (29 CFR 1910.134) establishes uniform guidelines for protecting your workers when they must work in hazardous atmospheres.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of Respiratory Protection training, the student will be familiar with:

Why the respirator is necessary
The type of respirator the trainee will be using
The respirator's capabilities and limitations
Improper fit, usage, or maintenance can compromise the protective effect of the respirator
Inspecting, putting on and removing, use, and checking the seals of the respirator
Cleaning the respirators, how to have it repaired, and how to store it
How employees are to respond to emergencies that involve respirator use
How to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent the effective use of respirators
Reviewing the regulations

Written Exam: SMS Test and hands-on competency will be evaluated at the end of each course. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.

Retraining: Student is responsible for retraining every year.
