  • Medical Care Person in Charge, formerly MCPIC (STCW-95 USCG)

    Overview: The Medical Person in Charge (MCPIC) course is designed for masters and chief mates and who have already completed a First Aid/CPR (STCW-95 USCG) 8hr course and the Medical Care Provider 40hr course.

    Course Length: 45hrs | CFR Reference: 46 CFR 10.205 (h) (1) (ii); 46 CFR 10.205 (h) (2) (iii); 46 CFR 10.205 (I) (3); 46 CFR 12.13-1 and 4 | Course Required By: United States Coast Guard for STCW-95 Endorsement

    Course Objectives: Upon completion of Medical Person in Charge (MCPIC) training, the student will be familiar with:
    • Manage care of casualties

    • Head and spinal injuries

    • Injuries to the ear, nose, and throat

    • Internal and external bleeding

    • Burns, scalds, and frostbite

    • Fractures, dislocations, and muscular injuries

    • Wounds, wound healing and infection

    • Pain relief

    • Techniques of sewing and clamping

    • Manage acute abdominal conditions

    • Minor surgical treatment

    • Dressing and bandaging

    • Aspects of nursing

    • Medical conditions and emergencies

  • Sexually-transmitted diseases

  • Tropical and infectious diseases

  • Alcohol and drug abuse psychiatry

  • Dental care

  • Gynecology and pregnancy

  • Medical care of rescued persons and hypothermia

  • Death at sea

  • Disease prevention

  • Vaccinations

  • Keeping of records

  • Surgical equipment and instruments

  • Radio medical advice

  • Transportation of the ill and injured

  • Medical care of the ill and injured
  • Prerequisites: Completion of First Aid/CPR (STCW-95 USCG) 8hr course and Medical Care Provider 40hr course.

    Written Exam: MCPIC final exam minimum passing score is 70%.

    Performance skills, such as clinical exams including eyes, ears and throat, the use of the otoscope and ophthalmoscope, the technique of suturing, Foley catheter insertion, splinting and bandaging, identification of wound infection, CPR, AED, bag-valve mask, patient assessment, oxygen administration, soft tissue injury, splinting and airway management will need to be performed to complete the program.
