In January 2016, Safety Management Systems, LLC (SMS) expanded their training catalog with the acquisition of a division of Petrofac based in Houston, Texas, which enabled them to begin providing Major Emergency Management (MEM) and expanded Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) training to oil & gas clients.

In October 2016, SMS opened a second emergency management simulation room and training course in their Lafayette facility, and is now able to offer the training in two cities.

The four-day emergency management training course is designed to provide actual or potential prospects of command with knowledge and experience, and is the first stage in the process leading to formal competency assessment.

Candidates begin with classroom instruction, then simulate various emergency scenarios executed by instructors in an immersive incident command-type room. The simulation room is equipped with lights, sirens, smoke, and sound effects to realistically mimic being on location. The course presents a variety of scenarios that can be played out, and scenarios specific to customers’ job skills or services can be customized.

“If an incident occurs, the first minutes of the response are critical to escalation prevention, and to the successful conclusion of the event. Even in a built-up area where emergency services can be quickly summoned, it is still the initial response that dictates the outcome, and someone must take control. With our emergency management training courses and simulation rooms located near client job sites and the Gulf of Mexico, we make it easier to provide this training to those potentially in a position of authority,” said Marc Pretorius, SMS Houston training manager.

The enrollment calendar for both the Houston and Lafayette locations can be found on SMS’ website.

Safety Management Systems is one of the largest health, safety, environmental, medical, security and training service companies in the United States.
