Safety Management Systems holds symposium to discuss lifesaving offshore issues

December 12, 2012- Safety Management Systems has recently held a symposium dedicated to important and lifesaving offshore issues.

At SMS’ Offshore Medical and Health Symposium several speakers presented information regarding the state of the oil & gas industry, medical evacuations and medical cases, Fit for Duty programs, safety sensitive medications for offshore workers, and maritime legal issues.

The esteemed speakers at the Symposium were Don Briggs, president of the Louisiana Oil & Gas Association; Dr. Donald Thibodaux, medical director of SMS and staff physician for the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic; Dr. Bob Bourgeois, medical director of the Bourgeois Medical Clinic; Dr. Tony Alleman, medical consultant of Cal Dive International and staff physician for the Occupational Medical Clinic; and Ralph Kraft, an attorney at Kraft Gatz, LLC, and current member of the State Bar of Texas.

After the speakers presented there was a question and answer portion of the program, where audience members addressed the panel and inquired about further information. In addition, the audience was treated to lunch and a tour of SMS’ impressive training facility. Acadian Air Med, a sister company to SMS, demonstrated an emergency helicopter landing and allowed attendees to view the aircraft.

Over 100 people attended the event, which SMS plans to hold annually to inform their peers in the industry on important and relevant topics.

“The Symposium was held to help educate others in oil & gas on the critical issues that are currently facing the industry,” said Gentry Perry, SMS’ regional manager of Gulf Coast operations. “It allowed speakers, as well as attendees, to share information and data in an effort to make the offshore workforce healthier and safer.”
