Overview: Seafarers designated to control fire fighting operations will be given 40 hours of advanced training in techniques for fighting fires with particular emphasis on organization, tactics, and command.
Course Length: 40 hours
Course Objectives: Students must meet the minimum standards of competence set out in the STCW Code. In accordance with Section A-VI/1-2 Basic Fire Fighting; the trainee will be able to:
- Properly don a fire suit and use a self contained breathing apparatus
- Use portable fire extinguishers to put out class A, B, And C class fire
- Use all purpose nozzles for protection and putting fires out
- Hose team advancement with team leader giving commands
- Enter an internal space with SCBA and put out a fire with the fire hose
- Properly enter a watertight door with a fire behind the door
- Rescue a victim (minimum 165 lbs.) from a smoke filled room wearing an SCBA
- Take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
- Perform an emergency drill following a station bill
- Identify what extinguishers to use on what class fire
- Properly ventilate and correctly over haul a fire
- Effectively contain a fire and use suppression system
In accordance with Section A-VI/3 Advanced Fire Fighting, the trainee will be able to:
Use firefighting organization, tactics and command procedures at sea and in port;
Use water for fire extinguishing and under the effects on stability;
Communication and coordination during firefighting operations;
Utilize ventilation controls to limit spread of fire and limit or extract smoke;
Utilize fuel and electrical system controls to limit spread of fire and reduce hazards to fire fighters;
Understand firefighting process hazards
Understand firefighting involving dangerous goods
Fire precautions and hazards for storing and handling materials
Manage and control of injured persons involving fire related injuries & illnesses;
Procedures for coordination with shore-based fire fighters;
Preparation of contingency plans and composition and allocation of fire parties;
Strategies and tactics for control of fires in various parts of the ship;
Inspecting and servicing fire detection systems,
Requirements for statutory and classification surveys; and assessment of causes of incidents involving fire.

Course Required By: USCG
Prerequisites: These courses are intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship's complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship. There are no particular educational requirements. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.
Written Exam: A minimum written test score of 70% is required. Students that fail the test will be remediated and allowed one retest. A second failure requires repeating the course before they may test again.
Students must satisfactorily perform hands-on evolutions as required by US Coast Guard assessments.
Retraining: Student is responsible for retraining every five years.
