Overview: The courses contained within STCW meet the mandatory minimum requirements for seafarers for familiarization, basic safety training and instruction in accordance with Section A-VI/1, A-VI/2, A-VI/3, and A-VI/4 of STCW Code.
Course Length: 40 hours
Course Objectives: This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention and Code Chapter VI, sections A-VI/1, A-VI/2, A-VI/3, and A-VI/4. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, and Basic Fire Fighting a trainee will be able to perform under a wide range of conditions.
Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-1, Personal Survival Training, the student will be familiar with:
- Keeping afloat without a lifejacket
- Donning a lifejacket
- Safely jumping from a height with and without jacket on body
- Boarding a life raft from the water while wearing a lifejacket
- Right an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket
- Taking initial actions on boarding life raft to enhance chance of survival
- Streaming a drogue or sea-anchor
- Operating survival craft equipment
Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-2, Basic Fire Fighting, the student will be familiar with:
- Properly donning a fire suit
- Properly donning and using a self contained breathing apparatus
- Using portable fire extinguishers to put out class A, B, And C class fires (this exercise is conducted 4 times: once for each class of fire)
- Using all purpose nozzles for protection and putting fires out
- Advancement of hose teams with the team leader giving commands
- Entering an internal space with S.C.B.A. and put out fire with fire hose
- Properly entering a watertight door with a fire behind door
- Rescuing a victim (min 165lbs.) from a smoke filled room wearing an S.C.B.A.
- Taking immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
- Performing an emergency drill following a station bill
- Identifying what extinguishers to use on what class fire
- Properly ventilating a fire
- Correctly over hauling a fire
- Effectively containing a fire and using suppression system
Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-3, Elementary First Aid, the student will be familiar with:
- Using barriers
- Insuring scene is safe setup
- Calling EMS
- Primary Assessment of patient
- Checking airway, breathing, circulation, and shock
- Positioning the patient
- Rescue breathing and CPR
- Stop Bleeding
- Procuring vital signs
- Identifying signs and symptoms for heart problems, stroke, allergic reactions, asthma, poisoning, diabetic, epileptic, and injury assessments
- Treating fractures, head, neck and back injuries
- Treating wounds
- Properly bandaging patient
- Caring for heat and cold exposure
- Treating for burns, scalds, and electrical injuries
- Operating location devices, including radio equipment
- Donning and using an immersion suit
- Performing an underwater helicopter egress
Upon completion of, Section A-VI/1-4 Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, the student will be familiar with:
- Understanding types of emergencies and the actions to take
- Recognizing emergency signals in station bill and using safety equipment
- Knowing the values of drills and training
- Understanding the importance of working safe
- Using appropriate escape routes
- Effectively communicating orders
- Understanding the importance of precautions prior to entering a confined space
- Recognizing when to use the Lock Out, Tag Out procedure
- Recognizing duties regarding pollution prevention
- Understanding policies regarding drug and alcohol abuse
- Maintaining appropriate employee relations

Prerequisites: These courses are intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship's complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship. There are no particular educational requirements. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.
Written Exam: Regulatory required with a minimum score of 80%. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.
Retraining: Student is responsible for retraining every five years.
