Basic Training (BT) Revalidation STCW 2010 (Entire Program)


The STCW Basic Training Revalidation course is a 1-day course that includes theory and practical hands-on training and assessment for STCW modules A-VI/1-1 and 1-2. The two modules can be taken together in one day or broken into individual modules as listed below.

Basic Firefighting: 4 hours
Personal Survival Techniques: 4 hours

Course Objectives

Upon completion of Basic Firefighting Revalidation, the student will be able to:

  • Properly don a fire suit
  • Properly don and use a self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Use portable fire extinguishers to extinguish small fires
  • Extinguish extensive fires with water using jet and nozzle sprays
  • Advance a hose team with the team leader giving commands
  • Enter a smoke-filled internal space with SCBA and extinguish fire with a fire hose
  • Properly entering a watertight door with a fire behind door
  • Take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
  • Perform an emergency drill following a station bill
  • Identify what extinguishers to use on what class fire
  • Properly ventilate a fire

Upon completion of Personal Survival Techniques, the student will be able to:

  • Don a lifejacket
  • Don and use an immersion suit
  • Safely jump from a height into the water
  • Right an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket
  • Swim while wearing a lifejacket
  • Board a survival craft from ship and water while wearing a lifejacket
  • Take initial actions on boarding survival craft to enhance chances of survival
  • Stream a drogue or sea anchor
  • Operate survival craft equipment
  • Operate location devices, including radio equipment

Reference: Successful completion of these courses will satisfy the training requirements of Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3 and A-VI/1-4 of the STCW 2010 Code as well as 46 CFR 11.302(d), 12.602(d),11.302(a)(3), 12.602(a)(3), 11.201(i)(1), 11.302(a)(4), 12.602(a)(4), 11.302(e), 12.602(e).

Written Exam: A minimum written test score of 70% is required. Students who fail the test will undergo remediation and are allowed one retest. A second failure requires repeating the course before they may test again. Students must satisfactorily perform hands-on evolutions as required by USCG.

Prerequisites: These courses are intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship, have held a previous STCW endorsement and have 1 year documented sea time in the previous 5 years. Students must be able to read and understand English. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.
