Multimedia Specialist Derek Chapman was nominated by Liberty Energy Services’ President Allan Weatherford for excellent performance and living the SMS mission. Allan says, “Derek was a key team member in the development of the Midship Environmental training video. He was timely and accurate in his work despite a demanding schedule. He demonstrated excellent teamwork at all times. In the end, we delivered a high-quality product to a very happy client.” We sat down with Derek to see how he lives the SMS mission and what a typical day looks like for him. If three words were to describe Derek, they would be “Disney, Disney, Disney”.

 

AC: Describe a typical day at work.

DC: I shoot and edit all the videos for all divisions of Acadian. I am also the photographer for the company.

 

AC: How do you get pumped up for the day?

DC: A cup of coffee and Disney parks music.

 

AC: What was the best vacation you have ever taken?

DC: I go to Walt Disney World every year or every other year, so all of them have been great vacations.

 

AC: Describe yourself in one sentence.

DC: I am very loyal and hardworking.

 

AC: What is your favorite thing about your job?

DC: Knowing I am helping and supporting the employees in our company that keep people safe and save lives.

 

AC: What food could you live on for a month?

DC: Bread pudding, but I would be big as a house. So salad.

 

AC: How do you stay motivated at work?

DC: I really enjoy what I do, so I do not look at it as work.

 

AC: What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career so far?

DC: I am also a freelance videographer. I have been a camera operator for all the television sports networks but my favorite is shooting music concerts. I have worked just about every music festival in the state and others states also. But the most fun I have ever had was running camera was for the Foo Fighters at New Orleans Jazz Fest.

 

AC: Who would play you in a movie?

DC: Darth Vader

 

AC: Tell us about a moment that changed your life.

DC: When my two daughters were born. Before, I could not imagine having kids, but now I could not live without them.

 

AC: What would be your advice for future [safety professionals]?

DC: Take pride in your work. Be positive, be passionate and be proud to be part of SMS.

 

AC: What is your favorite activity outside of work?

DC: Going to Walt Disney World.

 

AC: Name one book that inspired you professionally.

DC: Heavy Metal Magazine

 

AC: Which talent or superpower would you most like to have and why?

DC: To teleport, so I could go to Walt Disney World anytime I wanted or any concert.

 

AC: What was the best advice you were ever given?

DC: Be kind to everyone and treat everyone the way you would like to be treated.

 

AC: Do you have a bucket list? What are the top three things on it?

DC: Go to Disneyland, Hong Kong Disney and Tokyo Disney

 

AC: Do you have any pets? What are their nicknames?

DC: Two dogs – Chloe & Dudley

 

AC: A penguin walks through the door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?

DC: He says, “Sorry wrong door.” And asks where the restrooms are.
