Congratulations to our SMS Standout John Blackwell. John was recognized by our client for his outstanding work during his recent hitch. He was involved in taking care of multiple COVID-19 patients, as well as non-COVID-19 patients. Additionally, he was tasked with handling multiple medivac helicopters during these events. John was commended on his ability to stay calm and maintain a professional attitude during this time. Great work, John!
We were able to get a glimpse into what a day at work looks like for John and learn some fun facts about him.
A.A. Describe a typical day at work.
J.B. I have to check helifuel and helideck daily, check in all personnel departing the asset, go to morning meetings, and check all my AEDs and equipment.
A.A. What was the best vacation you have ever taken?
J.B. Taking my girls on their first beach trip.
A.A. Describe yourself in one sentence.
J.B. I am dedicated to providing the best medical care I can.
A.A. What is your favorite thing about your job?
J.B. I enjoy all aspects of my job.
A.A. What food could you live on for a month?
J.B. Steak and seafood.
A.A. Do you have a side hustle, hobby, or volunteer group that you’re involved in outside of work? What else do you spend your time doing?
J.B. I work part-time for two ambulance services, and I’m a volunteer fireman in my city. I love spending time with my two beautiful daughters.
A.A. How do you stay motivated at work?
J.B. I know what I do makes a difference and people rely on me to do my job and do it well.
A.A. What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career so far?
J.B. Delivered a beautiful girl within my first month as a paramedic.
A.A. Who would play you in a movie?
J.B. Jack Black or Chris Farley if he was still alive.
A.A. Tell us about a moment that changed your life.
J.B. When me and my partner were involved in a horrific incident. Our patient was killed and my partner was critically injured. It made me really realize that life could change in a blink of an eye. It taught me to love life and love the people around me and always tell my family that I love them before I leave for work or anywhere.
A.A. What would be your advice for future [safety professionals]?
J.B. To not let negative people in EMS put your fire out for helping people, and always keep your fire burning bright because you are truly helping people.
A.A. What is your favorite activity outside of work?
J.B. Fishing, hunting, and spending time with my girls.

J.B. None.
A.A. Which talent or superpower would you most like to have and why?
J.B. To hear what people are thinking; would be interesting.

J.B. If your heart stops racing when you get a call, it’s time to get out.
