Recent SMS Standout nominee, Safety Specialist Blaine Williams was nominated by Field Support Supervisor Jeff Vidacovich.  Jeff says, “Blaine is a five year SMS employee who is currently contracted to Shell Pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico. After many years of hard work and dedication, Blaine has just graduated and received his bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health.” We sat down with Blaine to see what keeps him motivated to live the SMS life.

AC: Describe a typical day at work.

BW: Typical day of work includes monitoring operations to ensure safe practices are being utilized as well as keeping the platform in compliance with the associated standards.

AC: How do you get pumped up for the day?

BW: I get pumped for the day by knowing that a job will only be successful if it is completed safely without incident and building friendships which strengthens the safety culture.

AC: What was the best vacation you have ever taken?

BW: Best vacation has been with my wife and kids on a visit to Toledo Bend.

AC: Describe yourself in one sentence.

BW: I try to be the best father and husband I can be while enjoying the outdoors and passing along the traditions of hunting and fishing to my kids.

AC: What is your favorite thing about your job?

BW: My favorite thing about my job is the relationships that I have acquired throughout my career.

AC: What food could you live on for a month?

BW: Mexican

AC: How do you stay motivated at work?

BW: I stay motivated by knowing safety is the key to success and releasing any stress I may acquire in the gym.

AC: What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career so far?

BW: The most fulfilling moment is being wanted on a team by leadership and being requested on different platforms.

AC: Tell us about a moment that changed your life.

BW: Getting married and having children has changed my life for the better as well as my biggest motivation.

AC: What would be your advice for future [safety professionals]?

BW: Learn the standards and best practices of the field and have the confidence to be vocal in order to voice your opinion if needed.

AC: What is your favorite activity outside of work?

BW: Hunting and fishing.

AC: Name one book that inspired you professionally.

BW: The Carpenter by Jon Gordon.

AC: Which talent or superpower would you most like to have and why?

BW: I would like to be able to fly.  This would make travelling easier as well as being able to get away and clear your thoughts.

AC: What was the best advice you were ever given?

BW: Keep a journal and document your daily activity.

AC: Do you have a bucket list? What are the top three things on it?

BW: Yes, I would like to bass fish professionally in tournaments one day as well as buy a lot of land.  The last is being able to retire.

AC: Do you have any pets? What are their nicknames?

BW: Yes, two dogs.  Ruger and Ellie.

AC: A penguin walks through the door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?

BW: Where is the A/C because he is offshore.
