Remote Paramedic Roger Brammell was nominated as an SMS Standout by Operations Supervisor Carl Dugas for quality of work, customer recognition, excellent performance and living the SMS mission. Customers have recognized Roger for assisting and troubleshooting the water testing system on a platform.

We wanted to know how Roger accomplishes this, so we took a peek into a day in his life to give you an idea of how SMS employees are living the core values every day. Roger likes fixing things, ice cream and thinks having X-ray vision would make his life much easier. 

AC: Describe a typical day at work.
RB: First thing is being responsible for the health and wellbeing of between 300-330 individuals onboard. Then a morning meeting to review the daily SIMOP activities, assist the HLO’s with helicopter arrivals and departures. Next up is potable water testing, food and accommodations inspections.

AC: What was the best vacation you have ever taken?
RB: A Month at summer camp in Colorado just before high school.

AC: What is your favorite thing about your job?
RB: Getting gratitude from patients for helping.

AC: What food could you live on for a month?
RB: Blue Bell ice cream

AC: What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career so far?
RB: Once there was an apneic anaphylaxis patient who reacted from ant bites. My intervention saved his life.

RB: Meeting my wife, which changed my destructive ways.

AC: What would be your advice for future [safety professionals]?
RB: Be a good public speaker.

AC: What is your favorite activity outside of work?
RB: I like to work on anything mechanical.

RB: Outward Bound

AC: Which talent or superpower would you most like to have and why?
RB: X-ray vision so I could text to Dr. Thibodaux

AC: What was the best advice you were ever given?
RB: If the grass is greener on the other side, there’s probably more manure there.

AC: Do you have a bucket list? What are the top 3 things on it?
RB: 1. To own a 12 cylinder Ferrari, 2. Travel to Australia & New Zealand, 3. Go to the Super Bowl

AC: Do you have any pets? What are their nicknames?
RB: After having to euthanize our Husky “Boomer” we can’t bring ourselves to get another pet.
