We were able to get a glimpse into what a day at work looks like for Deondra and learn some fun facts about her.
A.A. Describe a typical day at work.
D.R. My typical work day begins at 4:00 a.m. and consists of me working along with other SMS employees and Pharma-Safe Industrial Services to educate, screen, and perform COVID-19 tests on offshore personnel. My role on the job requires me to utilize my nursing skills while implementing COVID-19 protocols and guidelines established by the CDC, to ensure all personnel are of good health before their arrival offshore. Also, keeping open communication with Case Management, Operation Supervisors, and Offshore Logistic Coordinators.
A.A.What was the best vacation you have ever taken?
D.R. My best vacation was taken in the summer of 2021. My family and I went to Destin, Florida after skipping out on vacationing together for five years due to everyone’s complex work/school schedules.
A.A. Describe yourself in one sentence.
D.R. I am a very observant, flexible, dedicated, trustworthy, goal-driven, soft-spoken, and compassionate Virgo.
A.A. What is your favorite thing about your job?
D.R. The support that the company shows to its employees.
A.A. What food could you live on for a month?
D.R. Buffalo Wings; WingStop to be specific.
A.A. Do you have a side hustle, hobby, or volunteer group that you’re involved in outside of work? What else do you spend your time doing?
D.R. I am the President of the Kajun Gator, an all-women social club. We take pride in giving back to our community through several acts of service, such as creating fun and safe activities for kids to enjoy. This past spring, we hosted an Easter Egg Hunt and donated over 200 Easter baskets to the community. Last fall, we hosted a Festival on Halloween night to ensure the kids had a safe place to enjoy the holiday. We are currently making arrangements for our “Friendsgiving” event. We plan to provide the entire community with a Thanksgiving meal this upcoming November.
A.A. How do you stay motivated at work?
D.R. Remaining calm, setting deadlines, and smiling!
A.A. What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career so far?
D.R. Honestly, working with SMS has been the most fulfilling moment of my nursing career. SMS has given me the opportunity to utilize my skills in a non-traditional work setting.
A.A. Who would play you in a movie?
D.R. Mignon Von.
A.A. Tell us about a moment that changed your life.
D.R. The day I turned 26 and was kicked off my parent’s health insurance plan. Life really hit home that day.
A.A. What would be your advice for future [safety professionals]?
D.R. Learn as much as possible and remain open to new opportunities.
A.A. What is your favorite activity outside of work?
D.R. Gathering with my family.

D.R. The ability to be in two places at one time just so I could accomplish so much more.

D.R. 1. Visit Bora Bora.

A.A. Do you have any pets? What are their names?
D.R. I have one pet, a Cockatiel. His name is Tweedy, and he has been part of the family since August 2005.
